And That Rock Was Christ...... There is far more to our purpose in God than just being "saved." He has a Promised Land for us that we must possess. The Lord did not call Israel out of Egypt only to deliver them from bondage. His purpose was to bring them OUT of something INTO something. He wanted them to be the vehicle of His redemption so that the whole world would be delivered from their bondage. The first generation to leave Egypt did not enter into their inheritance or promise because of unbelief, which was displayed by their constant grumbling and complaining. If we're not careful in this 21rst Century we will follow the same path as that first generation and miss our inheritance as well. We must look to the true source of our faith - CHRIST. Israel drank from that rock and then perished in the wilderness. She serves as a warning to us not to depart from the Living God with a heart of unbelief.

TEXT: 1 Cor. 10:1-4 - Moreover,
brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were
under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; [2] And were all baptized unto
Moses in the cloud and in the sea; [3] And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
[4] And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual
Rock that followed them: and that Rock
was Christ.
A rock followed Israel during their wilderness journey, "and the rock was Christ." He was also the manna. Jesus is and has always been the source of the TRUE bread and water of life. In the wilderness experiences of our lives we usually learn this and become utterly dependent on Him. We learn to both hunger and thirst for HIM and nothing else. It is only the water that issues from the presence of the Lord Himself that can quench the true thirst of the human soul. Man's soul is so terribly empty without God. Nothing satisfies except Christ.
It sounds like an archaic record to state such but if it sounds like that it's probably because we've heard very little preaching of the all-sufficiency of CHRIST in a majority of churches, especially here in America, in these last days. The gospel has turned into an invitation to make ourselves better, our lives less hectic, our bank accounts larger, our way of life nicer and if we can squeeze the will of God into this somehow then that's even better. It sounds great but the end result as many will sadly discover is DEATH. Eternity is a long time neighbor and we all have a date with it at some point in our futures. Israel found out the hard way about what happens to us when we drink from the Rock then turn our hearts aside in unbelief. The revelation of this passage is one of Christ few understand. I'm not acting like I do totally but I feel the Lord has given me a little bit of revelation on it to write this message.
We know if we study our Bibles, that all that happened to Israel was recorded for our examples and admonition. We are not to, nor can we, judge Israel because of Her failure in the wilderness. What modern believer can stand up and say we have not failed also at times in believing God and trusting Him totally for our provision and life?
To be frank, our failure is worse because Israel did not have the revelation of the CROSS in her grasp back then; we do today! The New Covenant, a better covenant, built upon better promises, and headed up by a BETTER PRIESTHOOD in that of CHRIST, was not revealed to Israel, but to us the CHURCH. The source of all victory is the CROSS, which is in essence the NEW COVENANT. CHRIST is the covenant. It's not some doctrine, some theological discussion, or one of our church talking points. CHRIST and HIM CRUCIFIED is what encompasses ALL of God's plan for man. It was laid out before the foundations of the world were even though of:
1 Peter 1:20-22 Jesus can never be substituted for humanistic psychology or man-made formulas in man's quest for the truth and eternity. The powers of darkness that bind hapless humanity will never bow at the feet of a doctor's degree in mind-control, sir. Those so-called Christian counselors you have on staff pastor friend will never set one captive free. Many of those you have on staff are bound themselves. How can one leper deliver another? How can one helpless, hopeless individual reach down into a pit and pull another out? They can't! Only one can and He was the water that quenched Israel's thirst thousands of years ago in the wilderness. He is quenching the thirst for millions still today.
Plants and animals have different forms of food, but every living thing must have water in basically the same form. The creation itself is not God, but it does express the nature of the Lord and His character. We do not worship nature, yet we look at it to see God's attributes, eternal power, divine nature and His passion for a fallen human race:
Romans 1:20
Paul explained that "in HIM (CHRIST) we live, and move, and have our being." (Acts 17:28). Jesus is the fundamental Reason for the universe and for everything that was created. The whole creation reflects Christ. He IS the LIVING WATER. Just as over 70 percent of the earth's surface is water and over 70 percent of nearly every living thing is composed of water, the Lord fills ALL that live and holds them together. He permeates the creation with His presence. Man cannot run from God. It's that simple. God is everywhere. The world smirks at the Christian view that God is a Spirit and the Creator of all mankind, but in man's heart he knows God is real. When that soul which is strung out of drugs lays down at night reaching out for another fix, he is really reaching out for the void in his heart that only God can fill.
When the man or woman who sells their body for sexual acts in return for money turns another trick, they are in essence acting out a deeper need in their heart that really is a pit void of something they don't understand. That void can only be filled with God. That is why the foolishness of the modern church world in seeking to give sinful humanity something other than the simple gospel of Christ is so blasphemous and damnable. Man doesn't need another book to study or another counseling session. Man's problem is SIN and sin's power cannot be broken by any other means but by the power of the blood of Jesus Christ through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Every human being partakes of the presence of the Lord every day whether he realizes it or not. This is the common Grace God gives to all, yet so many reject that presence. Israel rejected it - not only in the wilderness - but when that very presence stood in her midst in the form of Jesus the man some 1500 years later. In the later days, it's clear that the church also does the same:
Rev. 3:13-15
Rev. 3:19-22
He
stands at the door OUTSIDE most of our meetings knocking waiting to get in. He
stands outside the HEARTS of many knocking, patiently waiting, for us to open
the door and let Him come in and do the work He so desires to do in all of us.
He wants to quench that thirst in the hearts of those seeking Him. He IS the
living water. He IS the manna from heaven. He IS the ROCK upon which we can
stand. Glory to God. Church of the living God, hear this preacher. Hear this
young man whose gray hair speaks of a life torn asunder in its past by seeking
after things that only temporarily quench thirst. HE IS OUR SOURCE. CHRIST IS
OUR SOURCE. CHRIST IS NOT DIVIDED. CHRIST IS NOT ASSEMBLY OF GOD. CHRIST IS NOT
BAPTIST. CHRIST IS NOT FOURSQUARE, WORD OF FAITH, CHARISMATIC or any such
movement. CHRIST IS NOT METHODIST. CHRIST IS NOT CHURCH OF GOD. CHRIST IS THE
SON OF THE LIVING GOD. All that we seek to do is mere piddle sticks compared to
the finished work He has already accomplished for us. Our part is to BELIEVE and
obey the voice of the Holy Ghost, He who speaks to the church in these latter
days. The Smitten Rock Follows Us
Exodus 17:6
We must never forget that. Israel turned away from the living water many times throughout her history to seek after other gods. Jeremiah described this terrible state of the nation like this:
Jeremiah 2:13-15 They forsook living waters for broken cisterns that held no water. What an awful state! Israel wondered in captivity because they did not recognize the true source of their freedom. Neighbor hear me. If the we do not cease from putting our faith in things other than the true living water of Christ - we're headed for the same result! All of Israel "drank" from the same spiritual rock. The original language literally states, "they were drinking" implying a continuous gift. The living water of Christ is continuous, never running out. We can't drink enough of it, yet we drink almost NOTHING of it in the majority of most churches.
And no amount of hype or statement to the contrary by church leaderships to the contrary can change that. If we as the Body of Christ were drinking from the Rock as we ought to - society would be changing! We'd be seeing a massive change in the spiritual atmospheres of our homes, our churches and our businesses and schools. Psychology and humanism are two broken cisterns that leaves man in a state of drinking from a broken cistern that holds no water. It can't solve man's thirst in his heart. Nothing can do that but faith in Christ and Him crucified!
Smiting The Rock - Spiritual Authority
There were two incidents that Moses was commanded to draw water from the rock. The first is recorded in Exodus 17 and the other is in Numbers 20. The first time Moses was commanded to take his rod and strike the rock. This act was a prophetic type showing that Christ would be smitten for our sins in order the bring forth the living waters of the Holy Spirit for the congregation of God. The second time Moses was told to "speak" to the rock:
Numbers 20:8
Jesus was to be struck once and only ONCE for our sins. Christ was to suffer only one time for our sins; after that He is never to be struck again. If we use the rod of authority that the Lord has given us to strike the Head, to make demands of Him, we have fallen to a most terrible presumption that could also cost many what they have been promised:
Hebrews 9:25 - Nor yet that he should
offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year
with blood of others;
When men use spiritual authority against the Lord and against the sheep under our care, who really belong to the Great Shepherd, we are treading on DANGEROUS ground. Some of the greatest tragedies of church history, many of them recently, have occurred and resulted from men trying to use the word of God to strike the source of that word - the ROCK - CHRIST! They use God's Word to demand His compliance, His submission. Such action is not FAITH in His Word; it is presumption in a most deadly and damnable form. It is in this arena that most false doctrine always gets birthed. And if you will think for a moment, you will find that most false doctrine today takes on the form of error in the arena of spiritual authority and submission!
Because many leaders get frustrated by immature and rebellious people, they take rash actions to make things happen to get the people into a right relationship with God. If we've been given that type authority from God, we must be extremely careful how we use it! Authority used in frustration or presumption always leads us down the road to arrogance, pride, self-delusion, and error. God grants us authority to use in obedience to the Holy Spirit, not another spirit, including even our own! Many think the voice they're listening to is the voice of God when in reality it's the voice of their own spirit man speaking out of anger, frustration or arrogance.
Moses was in such a place of great spiritual authority that his punishment was greater. Had one of Israel's elders done the same, it is probable that God would have given him no more than a rebuke. We don't know that for sure but to be sure we can state that greater spiritual authority requires greater and higher standards of obedience. God was not pleased with what happened and spoke directly to Moses when He delivered the fateful sentence.
Numbers 20:12 Preachers who don't preach the cross and live in humility are those who "believe Him not!" It's a matter of unbelief. Arrogance is a matter of unbelief and pride. Self-righteousness is a matter of unbelief. Preachers who use their anointing for presumption or selfish reasons and lord themselves over the sheep are en route for a fall and destruction! We attended such a church in 2004 where the pastor bragged each week how "separated" he was from the sheep and that they were to never call him with their problems. That's not a shepherd - that's a HIRELING! That man needs to be out doing something else than leading sheep. God's sheep are not to be toyed with. They are precious in the Lord's sight. When we abuse spiritual authority, MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS INJURED!!!!
That's also a reason why Paul warned those in authority to never put a novice in offices of leadership. It's not that young people can't serve, it's that younger people tend to be more tempted by the enemy to become prideful and arrogant. I've never been more shocked and saddened by the arrogance and self-righteousness of many of our seminary graduates who are being given pulpits of great churches without any testing of a true call and character checks. Who ends up suffering because of this? BOTH THE LEADER AND THOSE WHO LEADS!!!!!!
Sadly, it's not just the younger people who are falling into that trap. I've seen middle-aged and even older ministers with the same spirit. I am not throwing stones because the way and reason I recognize this is I was filled with it myself when I was young. I was the most arrogant, self-righteous, snobby, individual you'd ever want to be around. As I have grown older (I turn 40 next month!) I've realized that at 20 I thought I knew it all. At 40, I think I have safely come to say " I don't know anything!"
Pastors, we have been entrusted with the care of God's own children! WOE to the man who treats this responsibility as a job and not a calling and ministry. WOE to the preacher who with presumption and pride beats the flock of God into trying to make them submit to their petty and stupid rules and regulations.
When Adam fell, billions paid the price. When David numbered the people, the people paid the price for his sin (85,000 died as a result of the plague). If authority is misused, people will be hurt.
Those who seek position and authority will always ultimately wind up becoming stumbling blocks to those they lead because any authority given to man other than the Holy Spirit is false authority. It's also true that this type leader will always demand submission from their followers and be very paranoid at those who don't fall in line with their demands. They will literally become a Saul.
The true leader, anointed by God, will, like Christ, seek to become of NO REPUTATION, rather than to make a reputation. He will seek to HUMBLE himself and become the servant of all rather than the leader of all. The degree to which we gain influence by any means other than by the promotion of the Holy Spirit will almost certainly be the degree to which we will ultimately be humiliated. The wise leader will always seek to walk in increasing humility, not increasing visibility.
Matthew 23:12 - And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
1 Cor. 9:16 - For though I preach
the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe
is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! The Question About Covering And Submission The latest fad rocking the body these days is a simple question "who is your covering?" This is the terse query raised by many modern Christians whenever they encounter those who meet outside the institutional church. But what is at the heart of this inquiry? And what Biblical basis under girds it? Without a doubt, this doctrinal error has caused a great deal of confusion among weak-minded believers and caused a morass of subnormal Christian behavior. All of this is connected with a modern teaching known as "protective covering." This teaching holds that Christians are protected from doctrinal error and moral failure when they submit themselves to the authority of another believer or organization. The ones clamoring the most for this type government within the church can't cover themselves and keep themselves from moral failure and error! No man can do that! The only source of covering is the blood of Christ, which flowed from Calvary's cross 2,000 years ago. The flow of water from this ROCK we have talked about in this message was a prophetic type of the blood and water which would flow from our Lord many years into the future. That is our covering! Adam tried fig leaves and was still naked. Modern churches use this covering issue to put a band-aide on our nakedness and moral failures outside the cross of Christ! Is "Covering" Covered in the Bible? Strikingly, the word "covering" only appears once in the entire NT. It is used in connection with a woman’s head covering (1 Cor. 11:15). 1 Cor. 11:15 - But if a
woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a
covering. If the Bible is silent with respect to "covering," what do people mean when they ask, "Who is your covering?" Most people (if pressed) would rephrase the question to be: "To what person are you accountable?" But this raises another sticky point. The Bible never consigns accountability to human beings! It consigns it exclusively to God (Matt. 12:36; 18:23; Luke 16:2; Rom. 3:19; 14:12; 1 Cor. 4:5; Heb. 4:13; 13:17; 1 Pet. 4:5).
Let us be sure of this - we need accountability among ourselves. I think the failures of many ministries in the late 1980s would have been avoided had there been more accountability and true Christian love among the brethren. But accountability and covering are two different issues. The one we ALL are ultimately accountable to is God. HE, through CHRIST JESUS and HIM CRUCIFIED, is our covering. Even CHRIST cannot be that covering for us except it be the CRUCIFIED CHRIST! It is the blood He shed that provided man a covering for his failures before God. That covering does not provide protection from judgment if we are presumptuous in our actions, but it does protect the sincere seeker who, though he/she may fail often, is always seeking the heart of God. What do people really mean when they push the "covering" question? I submit that what they are really asking is: "Who controls you? Common (mis) teaching about "covering" really boils down to questions about who controls whom. And the modern institutional church is built upon such control. Of course, people rarely recognize that this is what is at the bottom of the issue. For it is typically well clothed with Biblical garments. In the minds of many Christians, "covering" is merely a protective mechanism. But if we dissect the "covering" teaching, which is rooted in many forms but mainly through what is commonly known as the "government of 12" movement, we will discover that it is rooted in a one-up/one-down, chain-of-command style of leadership. Within this leadership style, those in higher ecclesiastical positions have a tenacious hold on those under them. Oddly, it is through such top-down control that believers are said to be "protected" from error. The concept goes something like this. Everyone must answer to someone else who is in a higher ecclesiastical position. In the garden-variety, post-war evangelical church, this translates into the "laymen" answering to the pastor. In turn, the pastor must answer to someone with more authority. The pastor typically traces his accountability to a denominational headquarters, to another church (often called the "mother church"), or to an influential Christian worker. (The worker is perceived to have a higher rank in the ecclesiastical pyramid. So the "layman" is "covered" by the pastor. The pastor is "covered" by the denomination, the mother church, or the Christian worker. Because each is accountable to a higher ecclesiastical authority, each is protected ("covered") by that authority. So the thinking goes. This "covering-accountability" template is applied to all spiritual relationships in the church. And each relationship is artificially cut to fit the template. No relationship can be had outside of it—especially that of "laymen" to "leaders." But this line of reasoning generates the following questions: Who covers the mother church? Who covers the denominational headquarters? Who covers the Christian worker. Some have offered the pat answer that God covers these "higher" authorities. But such a canned answer begs the question. For why is it that God cannot be the covering for the "laymen"—or even the pastor? Of course, the real problem with the "God-denomination-clergy-laity" model goes far beyond the incoherent, pretzel logic to which it leads. The chief problem is that it violates the spirit of the New Covenant! For behind the pious rhetoric of "providing accountability" and "having a covering," there looms a system that is bereft of Biblical support and driven by a spirit of control. It is the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes that Jesus "HATES." If we are drinking from the ROCK that is CHRIST, we are drinking from the source of our covering! Rev. 2:15 - So hast
thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate.
[16] Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them
with the sword of my mouth. [17] He that hath an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the
hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name
written, which no man knoweth saving he that receives it. We pray the Lord's most bountiful blessings in 2005 on you and your home! We pray the Lord will grant you great discernment in these last days as the powers of darkness seek to destroy the true work of God on Planet Earth in these last days before harvest and judgment. Follow the rock! Drink the living water of Jesus today and feed on the manna of His revelation and power through the ministry of the Holy Spirit! God bless!
